Graduating students at RISD have traditionally had an opportunity to contribute to the design of their graduation ceremony in various capacities. When I joined the RISD Media Group in 2015, the process involved selecting a Graphic Design student to create aesthetic and thematic guidelines, while we provided operational and production support for the 10-15 pieces of collateral they would have to produce. Over the years I advocated for more creative dialogue with the students and the involvement of a wider range of departments at the school. For example, in 2018 I collaborated with an Illustration student, Karen Ko, and tried to push the campaign into a warmer, more organic space. The students I’ve worked with have consistently brought fresh perspectives to a repetitive project, and have led our work to exciting new places; in turn we provided them with an educational space that gave them professional experience. My implementation of a solid infrastructure for the design files and website content management allowed the team to focus on bringing the students’ visions to life.
